Product sustainability

Whether on the field or off it: fair and responsible action plays a central role in all of Borussia Dortmund’s activities. As a societal actor with significant influence, it is not only of great importance for BVB to continuously advance its own sustainable development but also to promote transformation processes and raise awareness. Step by step, we want to get better together. On this journey, we also want to take you along. This specifically means that, in addition to our conventional product range, we are gradually expanding our offerings to include more sustainably produced alternatives. We not only identify and explain these but also show you which certification labels we rely on and how we define “sustainable.” Borussia Dortmund is aware of its responsibilities. The focus is not only on optimal product quality but also on upholding human rights as well as social and environmental standards in relation to the supply chain.

From the Field to the Fan Shop

The “From the Field to the Fan Shop” initiative by BMZ and textile company BRANDS Fashion: Borussia Dortmund is collaborating with eight other football clubs from the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga to promote fair organic cotton in the production of their fan merchandise. Over the next three years, the “From the Field to the Fan Shop” project will support 450 Fairtrade-certified small farmers in India as they transition to organic farming. The cotton grown will be used in the production of merchandise items for clubs in the first and second Bundesliga. Additionally, about 1,000 children and young people from the region will benefit from sports training. The initiative was launched by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in partnership with the textile company Brands Fashion. Alongside 1. FC Union Berlin, Arminia Bielefeld, Eintracht Frankfurt, Hamburger SV, SV Werder Bremen, VfB Stuttgart, and VfL Wolfsburg, Borussia Dortmund and FC St. Pauli have recently joined the alliance.

Organic Cotton from India

The products of this initiative are made from fair organic cotton, grown in collaboration with small farmers in India. We source this cotton from the project and process it for our textile collections, which will be available starting at the end of 2023. At the same time, the project offers children and young people in the communities where the cotton is grown the opportunity to gain educational prospects through sports training, particularly benefiting girls and young women.

Conscious Decisions When Buying

Discover the labels to understand the sustainability aspects as you explore our products.

Fairtrade Textile Production

The "Fairtrade - Textiles" label aims to improve the living and working conditions of workers in the textile industry. It also supports environmentally sustainable production. The label also commits textile traders to fair trading conditions through licensing agreements.

Fairtrade Cotton

The "Fairtrade - Cotton" label represents socially responsible living and working conditions in cotton production. It specifically targets small farmers. The licensing fees and a portion of the Fairtrade premium are used for projects in the producing countries. The label also sets requirements for environmentally sustainable cotton farming.

Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)

The goal of the standard is to establish strict requirements for ecological and social conditions throughout the entire textile supply chain in the production of textiles and clothing using ecologically produced raw materials.

GOTS in Conversion

Here, the same standards as the regular GOTS certification are followed, with the distinction that the manufacturer is still undergoing GOTS certification, which takes three years.

Grüner Knopf

The "Grüne Knopf" is a government seal for textiles that consists of a total of 46 social and environmental criteria. It can be applied for by any company that manufactures and/or sells textile products to certify their goods.

Oeko Tex Made in Green

The seal represents materials tested for harmful substances, businesses that meet environmental sustainability standards, and safe, socially responsible working conditions. The special feature: with a unique product ID, you can trace the production of these labelled items exactly.
